Although subtle, there is an actual distinction between "shares" and "stocks." Specifically, the stock represents the asset itself which is an investment in a company or business, while a share serves as the measurement unit for that asset.

Therefore, the stock refers to the investment, while the share specifies the amount of ownership in that investment. However, these terms are used interchangeably by most people.
